Question: why does baking soda affect how much carbon dioxide is produced when u mix it with vinegar?
need for a science lab experiment. just what does baking soda do in the process
Answer: Its an acid base reaction. The baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a base and neutralizes the acid in the vinegar (acetic acid) and releases carbon dioxide in the process.
Here is the reaction :
NaHCO3 + CH3COOH ———> NaCH3COO- + H2O + CO2
