Question: how to change the colour of flames?
okay so im having a halloween party, and it’s going to be a BBQ and bonfire type of thing, and i wanted there to be an interesting activity to do
recently in science we did an experiment with copper chloride that made the flames of a bunsen burner turn green. I wanted to do a similar thing at my party but on a bigger scale, where you would just throw in the substance to make the bonfire flame change colour.
i heard that salt makes it turn bright yellow, and i also heard there are kits that you can get that change the fire colour. but i need to find out some ways that i can do it with easily attainable substances. welli hope you can help me, if you know any let me know.
Answer: get a garden hose cut it into pices and stuff a coppper pipe in side of the hose.. and put it in the fire. it will make the flames different collors..

Question: Apologia Science – has anyone used this for high school science?
I have used HomeSat for a few years for science and have been happy with it, but my kids are getting ready to start high school, and I was wondering how Apologia science would compare. It looks to me like it would take less time. They have a book, a CD with additional video clips and experiments, and even an audio CD of the book for one of my kids that has reading difficulties. Has anyone out there used the Apologia Science?
Answer: Yes, My daughter used Apologia for General Science.
It definitely has pros and cons.
The pros: excellent material. My daughter is very strong in science and this not only kept her attention but really boosted her knowledge of science. She switched to ABeka Biology this year and maintains a 97 average in this class. Can’t help but think part of it is due to the Apologia background she has.
she used the CD rom based program and we both liked the way it was delivered. She read some, some was read to her (think classroom setting, teacher explaining), there were video clips. After each new idea, it would pause to give some comprehension type questions.
The Cons: the text (including the computer based one) can be a bit dry. The actual text book is very text intensive and may not appeal to visual or hands on learners. My daughter tends to be distracted by more visual things, and does better with text intensive materials. The experiments can be a shot in the dark. The materials are not hard to come by at all, but they don’t always work (we found this across the board) The plus side to that is it is very easy to figure out what they were going for, so you are able to learn from it.
The testing materials and answer keys are on a separate disk on the computer edition. We have two computers, so it was quite easy to keep it all separate and make sure there was no (peeking) going on. I also liked that I could go in and see where she was and what she needed to do. The material is also very teacher friendly and it is easy to jump in and explain things to supplement the teaching they provide.
