Double Pulley
You have learned How to make a Pulley system. Making a double pulley is an extension of the single make a pulley system experiment. Follow the method below to make a double pulley science experiment.
Equipment needed to conduct double pulley Science Experiments
Similar to the other pulley science experiment, you only need wire, thread spools, string, a hook, and a bucket of load.
Method for making double pulley experiment
- Make two wire triangles. Use about 1 foot 2 inches (35 cm) of wire for each one.
- Attach two spools to each triangle.
- Thread the string around the pulleys as shown in the diagram. Use about 6 feet (2 meters) of string.
- Attach the heavy load to the pulley as before.
Now answer the following questions about the double pulley system you just made.
- Is it easier to life the load with the double pulley?
- How much string do you need to raise the load 1 foot (30 cm)? Compare this to the number you recorded for a single pulley experiment.
Explanation of pulley experiment
The pulley with one thread spool allows you to lift a heavy load directly underneath the pulley. The double pulley means you have to pull only a quarter as hard, but you have to pull for four times as long.

How to Make a Pulley
Do you want to know how to make a pulley system? Learn how to make a pulley system at your own house. Making a pulley system is easy. We will show you how to make a pulley system in this section of Science Experiments website.
What kind of materials you need to make a pulley system
To make a pulley system, you only need a wire, thread spools, string, a hook, and a toy bucket full of heavy objects.
How to make a pulley system?
Follow the method below and learn how to make a pulley system at your own house.
-
Bend about 8 inches (20 cm) of wire into a triangle shape and push the ends into a thread spool. You may need an adult to help you cut and bend the wire.
-
Find a suitable place to hang your pulley. A hook in the shed or garage or the hook at the end of a plant hanger will be fine.
-
Tie one end of the string to the handle of the load.
-
Wind the string over the thread spool.
Now answer the following questions about the pulley system you just made.
-
Is it easier to life the bucket with the pulley system or without?
- How much string do you have to use to lift the load 1 foot (30 cm)?
