Chemistry Experiments With Water

chemistry experiments with water
Question: Help with chemistry experiment?

I need to design an experiment for this project.

Experiment:
You are provided with a mixture, M of two solids. One of the solids in mixture M is soluble in water. Describe how you would carry out an experiment to separate the solids in mixture M and produce a sample of the soluble solid.

Please tell me with steps and the results obtained. Thank you!

Answer: It would seem to me that…

1. Add water to the total solid until it appears that no more is dissolving.
2. Filter off the insoluble solid.
3. Vacuum distill the filtrate until most of the water is removed into the collection flask. You should be left with solid in the distillation flask and a bit of water (NEVER distill to dryness since doing so can cause an explosion). If you need the solid completely dry, let water evaporate for a while (or, boil it off)
