Question: What experiment could I design that investigates why air rises when it is heated?

Include a control and APPROPRIATE variables…. (sixth grade science)

Answer: Air rises when it’s heated because its density decreases.

Put some air in a balloon, measure its diameter (with cardboard calipers).
Then heat it up with a hair drier and measure it again.

Also, you could make a balance with a drinking straw as a balance beam, and a pin as a fulcrum. Put the balloon filled with air on one side of the straw, and a paperclip on the other. Push the pin through the straw halfway in between, hold on to the pin, and slide the paperclip until it just balances the balloon. Then heat the balloon with the hair dryer. This may or may not cause the balance to tip, until the air in the balloon cools off. Why?
